In 1988 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned manufacturing of the majority of asbestos- containing building materials. While they were no longer being manufactured, many of these products remained available for sale into the early 1990s. As a result, there are many buildings in our community that still contain these materials today.
The requirements for identifying, quantifying, and managing asbestos materials in schools and commercial buildings are contained in a relatively compatible series of federal, state and local regulations. These regulations set clear expectations for certification of professionals involved in sampling, managing, removing and documenting asbestos related activities.
